What's Your Story?
It’s amazing how God works to tie things together—the lengths and measures to which God goes, to reveal himself to us. Last year in the youth ministry, we focused on the many different questions that teenagers (and most adults) ponder in regards to their faith. We explored things like “Why do bad things happen?”, “Science or faith?”, and “How do I know that the Bible is true?” Digging into these questions allowed us to explore and own our faith, as we sought answers to some of life’s deepest questions. Our main scripture for the year was 1 Peter 3:15, which says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone that asks you to give a reason for the HOPE that you have.”
Like most teenagers, we are all faced with tough questions in regards to our faith, especially as we encounter a world that increasingly seeks to answer life’s toughest questions outside of the spiritual realm. The unbelieving world would argue that the answers to those questions are that God is not good, that evolution explains creation and life as we know it, and that the Bible is simply a history book or fairy tale best reserved for times of desperation. But as believers, we must be prepared to give an answer to the scoffers and critics. We must be prepared to defend and share our faith and beliefs – that God is good and that the answer to all of life’s questions and struggles is found within the sacred and god-breathed scriptures.
Fast forward to today… This school year the theme for the youth ministry is “His Story, My Story, Our Story” (Psalm 78:1-4). Our goal is to study the Bible, from Genesis to the formation of the early church, in attempts to truly know and understand the scriptures. In understanding God’s story, we can make sense of our own individual stories and from there, attempt to defend and share our faith with others.
It’s amazing to me how God orchestrated our focus last year, on answering life’s questions according to scriptures, to leading us to study the scriptures this year, as we continue to attempt to give an answer for the HOPE that we have. As our students owned and claimed their faith last year, they continue to do so as we dig deeper into the scriptures this year. It’s even cooler that God is leading us, as a church family, to dig into the scriptures in our “40 Days in the Word” series.
I truly believe that God is leading us to love and know him more intimately, through His Word. As we seek to “Learn it. Love it. Live It.”, I am certain that God will reveal His story to us, which in turn, reveals each of our own individual stories. Knowing God’s story and our own stories, will lead us to share both with those we encounter.
MY HOPE is in the Lord, as He unveils His story to us. MY HOPE is that He will reveal your story to you, that you might share your story with others. Knowing and understanding our stories, empowers us to share the love of Christ with others.
