Operation Christmas Child has a slogan that says “The power of a simple gift”. Maybe slogan is the wrong word because the shoeboxes are so powerful to the children that receive them. They fill a void.
This got me thinking about our gift that we selfishly hold on to. Why are we so greedy with it? Maybe that reason is out of fear because you don’t know how to offer the gift or are afraid you will offend someone with it. Or we are afraid that if the gift is shared then someone won’t look at us the same. What is that gift? Our Salvation…Our Eternal Salvation. That is a big gift! Huge even. Not as big as what Christ did for us, but it is the most important thing that we can share with someone. Matthew 28:18-20 says ”Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: ‘God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.’” (The Message) He told us to go train them…..share the gift.
Sharing that gift may mean the difference between Heaven or hell…..there really is power in that gift!
