The economy tightens. Relationships fracture. Hope grows thin. In those moments, the question that quietly forms in the back of our minds is one humanity has wrestled with for thousands of years: Is this what we deserve?
It is a deeply human question. And it is one that the ancient world answered with a framework that felt logical, even fair. The idea was simple: bad things happen because of bad choices. Sin produces suffering. Wrongdoing produces consequences. Every misfortune could be traced back to a moral failure somewhere. This was not just folk wisdom. It was theological conviction. And for a long time, it shaped how people understood their relationship with God.
But then came a cedar tree. And everything changed.
The World Ezekiel Lived In
The prophet Ezekiel was a man of his time. He believed, as many did, that suffering was the direct result of human sin. When the nation of Judah fell into ruin under the disastrous leadership of King Zedekiah, a king whose betrayals and failures ultimately brought the armies of Nebuchadnezzar crashing down upon his people, Ezekiel saw a direct line between the sin and the suffering. And to some degree, he was not wrong. Leadership matters. Character matters. The choices of those in power ripple outward and touch everyone around them.
But here is where the story takes a remarkable turn.
In Ezekiel 17, verses 22 through 24, in the very depths of Judah's despair, God does not respond with a verdict. God responds with a vision. God declares that he himself will take a tender shoot from the top of a great cedar and plant it on a high mountain. That small, fragile sprig will grow into something magnificent, a noble cedar so expansive that birds of every kind will nest in its branches and find shelter in its shade. And every tree in the field will look upon it and know that God has done this.
This is not the language of retribution. This is the language of grace.
The Difference Between Retribution and Generosity
Retribution operates on a closed system. You get what you give. Wrong is met with punishment. Failure is met with abandonment. In a world governed purely by retribution, there is no room for second chances, no space for renewal, and certainly no hope for those who have already fallen.
But generosity breaks that system wide open.
When God looked at Judah at its lowest point, the response was not to catalog every failure and deliver a proportional punishment. The response was to plant something new. To reach into the wreckage and introduce the possibility of growth where growth seemed impossible. That is the nature of divine generosity. It does not wait for circumstances to be favorable. It does not require that we have earned it. It moves toward us precisely when we are most broken, most lost, most in need of something we cannot produce for ourselves.
There is a telling observation about people who are consumed by retribution: they are never generous. When someone is wholly focused on getting even, on making sure the score is settled and justice is served on their own terms, they lose the capacity to see the suffering around them. They cannot hear the cries of their own people. They cannot imagine a different future because they are too invested in relitigating the past. Retribution does not just damage the one it targets. It hollows out the one who carries it. There is an old saying that when you set out to get revenge, you should dig two graves.
God refuses that path. Instead, God plants a cedar.
The Cedar and the Cross
This image from Ezekiel finds its fullest expression in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When Jesus looked out at the crowds following him, he did not see people who had earned his attention. He saw people who were like sheep without a shepherd, scattered, vulnerable, and desperate. His response was not judgment. It was compassion. He called for workers to go into the harvest. He went himself.
The cross is the ultimate act of divine generosity. It is God refusing to let human sin have the final word. It is the tender shoot planted in the soil of human brokenness, growing into something that offers shelter and life to everyone who draws near. The resurrection declares what the cedar in Ezekiel's vision declared: God has done this. Death does not win. Retribution does not win. Generosity wins.
The early church captured this in a cry of defiant joy. The apostle Paul, writing in 1 Corinthians 15, poses the triumphant question of where death's sting has gone, declaring that victory belongs to God through Jesus Christ. That victory is not earned. It is given. It is an act of overwhelming, unstoppable generosity.
What This Means for How We Live
If the God we follow is a God of generosity rather than retribution, then we are called to reflect that same generosity in the world. This is not a minor adjustment to our lifestyle. It is a fundamental reorientation of how we see everything: our resources, our relationships, our time, our forgiveness.
Generosity makes possible what seems impossible. It is stronger than death. It is the force that builds communities, restores relationships, and gives hope to people who have run out of reasons to hope. When we choose generosity over retribution, when we choose to plant something new rather than burn down what has failed, we are participating in the very work of God in the world.
The cedar has been planted. The branches are wide. There is room for every kind of bird, every kind of person, every kind of story.
The question is simply this: Will we live as people who know that, and give accordingly?

Growing Together: Generosity, Judgment, and the Wisdom of the Wheat and the Weeds

There is a parable tucked into the thirteenth chapter of Matthew that feels almost uncomfortably relevant to the world we are living in right now. It is the story of a farmer who plants good seed in his field, only to discover that an enemy has crept in under cover of darkness and scattered weeds among the wheat. When his workers discover what has happened, their instinct is immediate and practical: let us go pull the weeds out. The farmer's response stops them cold. Not yet. If you pull the weeds now, you will uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until the harvest.
It is a story about patience. It is a story about judgment and who holds the right to render it. And perhaps most surprisingly, it is a story about generosity.

The World We Are Growing Up In

We live in a time of extraordinary connection and extraordinary confusion. Information travels faster than ever before. We can reach thousands of people in seconds, share ideas across continents, and access more voices than any previous generation could have imagined. And yet, something strange has happened alongside all of that connectivity. The easier it has become to communicate, the harder it has become to trust.
Opinions circulate freely, dressed up in the language of certainty. Theories get shared as facts. Ideas that have no grounding in evidence travel just as far and just as fast as ideas that do. And in that swirling noise, something quietly suffers. Generosity suffers. Because generosity requires trust, and trust requires a foundation.
When we do not know what is true, when we cannot tell the reliable voice from the unreliable one, we pull back. We protect ourselves. We stop giving the benefit of the doubt. We stop extending grace. We become guarded, suspicious, and small in our dealings with one another. And in doing so, we lose something essential about what it means to live in community.

The Weed That Looks Like Wheat

The particular weed in Jesus' parable was known as bearded darnel. What made it so insidious was not just that it was harmful, though it was. Bearded darnel was poisonous, even narcotic in its effects. What made it truly dangerous was that it was nearly indistinguishable from wheat in its early stages. The two plants looked so alike when young that even a careful eye could be fooled. And by the time the difference became visible, the roots had grown so deeply intertwined that pulling one up meant pulling up the other.
This is not simply an agricultural observation. It is a profound statement about the nature of human community. There is no such thing as a community without complexity. There is no family, no church, no neighborhood, no friendship that is made up entirely of the straightforward and the uncomplicated. The good and the difficult grow up together. Their roots become intertwined. And the person who is absolutely certain they can identify which is which, and who appoints themselves to do the separating, is the most dangerous person in the field.
This is a hard word for those of us who like clarity. We want to know who the good people are and who the bad people are. We want categories. We want the ability to sort. But the parable pushes back against that impulse with quiet firmness. You do not have the capacity to see into the heart of another person. You may think you are pulling up a weed and you are ripping out wheat. The work of final judgment belongs to someone else.

What Generosity Actually Looks Like

If judgment is not our work, then what is? The answer is generosity. And not a thin, conditional generosity that we extend only when it is easy or when we are certain the other person deserves it. The generosity being called for here is deeper and more demanding than that.
It begins with refusing to make snap judgments about one another. It means holding open the possibility that the person who appears to be going down the wrong road may be the very one God is drawing close. It means acknowledging that the person who looks polished and upright on the outside may be carrying something we know nothing about. We simply cannot see what God sees. And knowing that, we are freed from the exhausting and ultimately futile work of trying to sort everyone around us into categories of worthy and unworthy.
Generosity also looks like patience. Not giving up on people even when we cannot change them, even when relationships become strained or broken, even when the distance between us grows wide. We do not stop praying. We do not stop treating one another as people of worth and dignity. We do not let the brokenness of the world become an excuse to abandon kindness.
This is not naive. It does not mean pretending that harm is not harm or that wrong is not wrong. It means trusting that the harvest will come, that the One who knows will bring the judgment, and that our job in the meantime is to keep showing up with open hands.

The Potter and the Clay

There is an image from the book of Jeremiah that speaks to all of this with remarkable tenderness. Jeremiah 18 describes God sending the prophet to watch a potter at work. The potter is shaping clay on a wheel when something goes wrong. There is a flaw in the vessel. But rather than discarding the clay, the potter simply gathers it back up, smooths it out, and begins again.
God asks Jeremiah whether the same might be true of people. Whether the same patient, unhurried, undefeated creativity might be at work in us. The answer, woven through the whole of scripture, is yes. We are not thrown out when we are flawed. We are reshaped. We are begun again.
That is the foundation on which generosity rests. Not in our own certainty or our own goodness, but in the reality that we are held by a love that does not give up. A love that keeps working, keeps reshaping, keeps beginning new things even when the old ones have gone sideways.
In a world full of noise and confusion and mistrust, that love is the one steady thing. And from that steadiness, we can afford to be generous. We can afford to be patient. We can afford to let the wheat and the weeds grow together, trusting that the harvest is in better hands than ours.
