Ongoing Missions Opportunities
This ministry provides food for the weekend for at risk children in area schools. Currently the ministry serves two schools: David Cox Elementary School and Moorehead Academy; there are 30 - 35 bags to fill a week! We need volunteers for 1.5 hours per month to pack bags at the school, prayers, and food donations.
Our priority needed items are: fruit or applesauce cups, canned vegetables, individual breakfast food, canned soups (kid friendly, no creamed soups), snacks (Lance crackers, pudding cups, pop-corn, etc.).
Donations can be dropped off in the colorful bins located at the main entrance to the sanctuary. Questions? Contact Sally Ropp at 704-301-6519 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
North Star Reading Program
Did you know that a child’s reading level by the end of third grade is one of the leading determinants for their path in life? We are partnering with David Cox Elementary to help local school children that are struggling with reading and reading comprehension. For more information, please contact Toni Asher at email@example.com.
Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry
UCUMC has partnered with Statesville Avenue Presbyterian Church Loaves & Fishes Pantry. As a partner we will collect food each month to be donated directly to the local pantry. UCUMC collects non-perishable food items; bring donations to church that Sunday and place them in the labeled shopping carts in the Hall of Ministries. In addition to food donation, we take responsibility for staffing the pantry on Mondays from 10am-1pm. This is an incredible partnership with a church that has fewer members but a perfect facility. We encourage you to connect and serve! Contact Cindy Leap for more details: firstname.lastname@example.org or 704-904-1121.
Room In The Inn
Each year UCUMC has taken part in Urban Ministry's program Room In The Inn by hosting 10 homeless neighbors one a week during the winter months (Dec - Mar). Small groups, Sunday School classes and groups of individuals sponsor one night during the four months to provide our neighbors with a warm, safe place to sleep, three meals (dinner, breakfast, and bagged lunch), an opportunity to use a phone and shower, and to have a time of fellowship. English as a Second Language (ESL) -
We need your help with a two hour a week to tutor adults as they learn to speak, read, and write English. Training is provided. Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT need to know a foreign language to be a tutor. You DO NOT need to be a professional teacher or spend hours preparing lessons.
You DO need to speak English. You DO need to be friendly. If you are interested in learning more about becoming an ESL tutor or are interested in taking an ESL class, contact Andrea Reed at email@example.com or 704-548-0703.
