REACH 2016 Stop Hunger Now Meals

Hey University City! Our REACH 2016 Missions Conference was a tremendous success in more ways than we can describe in one post, but one of the most exciting events from the week was getting to pack thousands and thousands of bags of food to send to hungry children and their families.  We were thrilled to receive the following message from Stop Hunger Now letting us know that the food you provided and packed has arrived at its destination and is filling empty stomachs as we speak!  Enjoy the following story of how God is using UCUMC to be His hands in Nicaragua...

For 6th grader Jonathan Lambert, and many other children like him around the world, going to school means hope. "I am really happy because sometimes this is the only meal I get for the whole day," he said. "My jeremy_stophungernow-report.png parents are not able to buy me food." The Stop Hunger Now meals Jonathan eats every day at school give him more energy to study and focus, and his grades have risen from Bs to As.

Jonathan is only one of the tens of thousands of children around the world who receive Stop Hunger Now meals at school. By packaging meals with us, you have helped Jonathan grow and thrive. And because you shared your time with us, children have hope for their future, families can take a step out of poverty, and communities can prosper.

We are delighted to announce that the meals from your meal packaging event on October 15, 2016 have been shipped in a container totaling 285,120 meals from our Charlotte, NC warehouse. The meals will be received by our in-country partner ORPHANetwork in Nicaragua.

ORPHANetwork's mission is to equip orphans and at-risk children in developing countries to fully realize their God-given potential. They serve abandoned, abused, and at-risk children in Nicaragua through local churches, school systems, and orphanages. ORPHANetwork supports 155 feeding programs throughout Nicaragua. Through these programs, nearly 18,000 children are nourished each weekday. The communities served are some of the poorest in Nicaragua and the feeding programs prevent children from becoming social orphans. By guaranteeing one nutritious meal to these children each weekday, the probability they can continue living with their families increases significantly. The programs also serve the community holistically by drawing the children to school, monitoring their health, teaching health and hygiene, working with pregnant mothers on pre-natal and infant health, providing a space for families to work together and connecting them to the local church. ORPHANetwork additionally supports six orphanages, which are home to more than 300 children.  www.orphanetwork.org
