My Hope is Built on Nothing Less
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness….
Now those words to a favorite hymn have meaning to me but for many years my hope was built on my efforts, what I could accomplish through my talents, energy and experience! Being the oldest of 8 children, and yes, raised Catholic, I knew what the rules were: do good/be a good model and earn your way to heaven. And my strong “work ethic” made me dependable, reliable, bossy if you ask my siblings, and STRESSED! As a young mom attending the neighborhood Methodist church, I joined a Sunday School and began reading the Bible. I was like a sponge absorbing all that God really wanted me to know about Him and His plan for my life.
What I came to realize it wasn’t all about what I COULD DO, but about letting Jesus set my priorities, doing my best, but letting God handle the rest. What a relief to know it didn’t “all depend on me to get things perfectly right!” I don’t have to earn but rather just accept the gift of Jesus. The calm and joy that has come into my life has been transformational!
I wanted everyone to make this discovery of God’s love and care in their life, and that’s what led me into getting my Master’s in Christian Education from Pfeiffer University. And in my 22 years of ministry, I’ve seen my life change from being the “doer” to the “encourager” of others to see God’s presence in their life. Two years ago my husband, David, and I began volunteering two afternoons a month as tour guides at the Billy Graham Library. The experience of encountering people from all over the world and hearing the stories of the difference Jesus makes in lives have humbled us both. What an awesome God we serve.
There are a lot of hurting and striving people in this world that need the hope of peace, calm, joy, and purpose that only Jesus can give them. I think about the words I recently heard “we don’t have to bring everyone to Jesus, but rather bring Jesus to everyone.” Every day I think of how I can bring that to someone by just a friendly smile, an encouraging word or small act of kindness.
Let me encourage you to join a small group to learn more about My Hope,: Contagious Christians, Sundays at 9:45AM in room 107 beginning July 28, or Just Walk Across the Room at 6:30PM on beginning Thursday, Aug 1.
