METRO DISTRICT DISASTER RESPONSE

Donations

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast of the U.S. August 26 affecting millions of people with multiple days of heavy rain, winds, and rising tides. The United Methodist Church is actively present, working with local and state emergency management, FEMA, and other volunteers active in disaster. The Western North Carolina Committee on Relief encourages you to:

Donate:

We invite you to stand with our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your gifts ensure that our church will be able to provide help and hope for those left homeless or otherwise affected by this disaster for years to come. Please mark your donations (for Western NC teams and relief aiding in Texas and beyond) "Disaster Response"

Metro District Supply Relief Drop-Off

Supply Relief Drop-Off:

Please help us build the UMCOR inventory of relief supplies. At this time, UMCOR is in need of hygiene kits and cleaning buckets. With many potentially suffering damage to their homes from flood waters, our greatest need is cleaning buckets. Churches and individuals can assemble these supplies, deliver to one of these drop sites, and the supplies will be shipped via UMCOR to the most necessary areas.

UNITED METHODIST CONFERENCE CENTER
3400 Shamrock Drive
Charlotte, NC  28215

Beginning Monday, August 28

Ending Thursday, September 14

  • Upon arrival at the gate, please announce that you are dropping off cleaning buckets and hygiene kits. You will be directed where to pull your vehicle.

  • And, please plan to bring helpers with you to unload your buckets and/or hygiene kits from your vehicle and into the basement.

Early Response Teams:  Trained Early Response Teams, please be on standby. FEMA nor local authorities are ready to receive volunteers. Once ERTs are invited, the Western North Carolina Conference will notify those ERT members.

Long Term Recovery:  The effects of Harvey will keep long term volunteer teams busy for years. Please be patient before sending long-term building and recovery crews. Please do not arrive without an invitation, and only after Early Response Teams have prepared the location.

Place all liquid items in the bucket first. Place remaining items in the bucket, fitting them around and between the liquid items. Sponges, scouring pads, clothespins, and trash bags can be separated in order to fit all of the items in the bucket. Ensure the lid is closed securely.

Important Notes:

  • All items must be new except for the actual bucket and lid.

  • All cleaning agents must be liquid and in plastic containers. No powders, please.

  • If you cannot find the requested size of a liquid item, use a smaller size. Including larger sizes of any item will prevent the lid from sealing.

  • If all of the items on the list are not included, please put a label on the bucket indicating what has been omitted.

  • Cleaning buckets are only used within the United States. They are not opened to verify the contents unless there is indication that some items have been omitted.

  • UMCOR does require that all patriotic symbols be removed from the kit contents. For example, if an item in a kit has a stamp that contains the American Flag, that stamp must be removed, covered or blacked out.

Processing & Shipping Costs: Please bring separately an envelope containing at least $1.50 for each cleaning bucket you are donating. This donation enables kits to be sent to areas in need. Do not put the money inside of the buckets!

  •
    • One-gallon size sealable bag only

Assembly Directions

Lay out the hand towel flat on a table. Lay the washcloth flat in the center of the hand towel. Place all remaining items on top of the washcloth. Fold over the sides of the hand towel to cover all of the items. Fold over one end of the hand towel so that it covers all of the items. Grasp the bundle of items tightly and roll over the remainder of the hand towel tightly. Place the tightly rolled bundle in the plastic bag. Remove as much air as possible and seal the bag.

Important Notes

  • All items must be new.

  • Do not wash any of the items as they will be considered used.

  • Please remove all packaging, unless otherwise specified.

  • All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Due to the fact that strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items, nothing more.

  • Do not include any personal notes, money, or additional material in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.

  • UMCOR is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to Hygiene Kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent. Do not put single dollar bills in each kit. Collect all money for toothpaste and shipping, then place it in a separate envelope and send along with the kit donations.

  • UMCOR does require that all patriotic symbols be removed from the kit contents. For example, if an item in a kit has a stamp that contains the American Flag, that stamp must be removed, covered or blacked out.

Packing & Shipping Instructions:  Please do not bring boxes of kits heavier than you can lift. Paper case boxes are a good size.

Processing & Shipping Costs: Please bring separately an envelope containing at least $2.00 for each hygiene kit that you are donating. This donation includes funds to purchase toothpaste in bulk, and enables kits to be sent to areas in need. Do not put the money inside of the kits!
